Mother of Gold

Mother of Gold or even Golden Mother, is a legend from the shores as well as from the hinterland, around the Paraíba Valley (State of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro). It might be related to the Boitatá, but differently from that one, it is totally harmless, not attacking anyone. It is a rounded shape "light" that comes from the sky and flies over the plains, fields, and beaches. It's color is generally like that one of gold, a little yellowish - as its name suggests. The people believe there are treasures hidden in the places where the light falls or lands. In the surroundings of the small town of Ubatuba, on the Northern Shores of The State of São Paulo, a fisherman from the Perequê-Açu Beach, says he saw the Mother of Gold - a great ball of fire - crossing the sky from one side to the other; "it came from the surroundings of the Acaraú River and it feel on the Caruçu-Mirim Hill".

Other caiçaras (people who are born on the shores) have already seen in dark nights with no stars, that incandescent ball of fire flying in the sky, following a curved path and falling on the hill, indicating that there must be a treasure hidden up there. "And it can be true", says Candinho Manduca: "There on the Prainha Beach, there was a rich mansion a long time ago, facing the wharf. On the right side of the wharf there's a tunnel that crosses the hill from one side to the other one, leading to the Perequê-Açu Road. Right in the middle of the tunnel, there's a saloon where there are barrels and arks full of gold and precious stones. Wealth that were taken from the entrails of the land of Minas (nowadays a Brazilian State named Minas Gerais - General Mines), intended for the Portuguese Metropolis, but that when arriving here rom Minas, it was put out of its way by the smugglers."

"There must have been a problem and the treasure is still here, hidden in the hill". But who wants to cross the tunnel, home of snakes and other venomous animals, leaning against those walls full of clammy wetness and tatally ruined by the time? Some people have already tried but they didn't have to guts to get into the saloon where the treasure is. It is still there and sometimes, there are the ones who see the Mother of Gold crossing the sky and falling on the hill where the treasure is hidden".
