Boto

It is one of the most famous legends of the Brazilian Folklore. The Botos are the dolphins that live in the Amazon, in the rivers, but that doesn't mean that the boto can only be found there. Being a dolphin, it can go to the sea, other rivers and estuaries. Some people like the Jesuit Simão de Vasconcelos (17th century), made clear that the boto-man had a whole on the top of the head, and this was the reason why sometimes he appeared wearing a hat, in order to hide it. Some other botos don't wear the hat, hiding the blowhole with the hair. The Indians believe that the boto is the god of the rivers and the god of the fish, therefore they deeply respect the animals what unfortunately does not happen with the "caboclos people" living along the Amazon banks, who were used to killing the animals with rod sticks because of the legend, ignorance, ancient beliefs or because the animals got the fish from the their fishingnets. Nowadays, things have deeply changed with severe Federal Laws that protect these lovely animals, much more intelligent then the humans.

The boto also loves so much women, he loves to date girls all the time and he is able to scent the feminine odors from long distances; scents as those of women who got their periods, turning their canoes upside down, never killing the women because they always survive this sexual experience, giving birth later to the so-called children of the boto (fatherless children), so the event explains totally the mysterious paternities. The botos are hard drinkers and they never refuse anything too alcoholic and never get drunk. Many are seen around in bars near the banks of the rivers. The botos wait for the night to go out of the waters and they get back to the river before the dawn. They like to drop by at parties along the rivers and beaches because they love dancing, having a god time and dating beautiful women (they don't seem to like fat, ugly women). They are very romantic and gallant. They always go out with girls from these parties, they seduce them and make love with them. When a woman is pregnant and doesn't know who the father is, the people are used to saying...that's the sun of a boto (maybe a more gentle way to say SOB).

Once some people organizes a lot of parties in the city. That was the kind of opportunity for the botos! In one of those parties, right after the beginning, 2 youngsters dropped by. After introducing themselves, they said they would like to joint the party since there were no parties in the place from where they came from. Aware of what was at stake, one of the locals said privately to the ones who were throwing the party: "- let's be careful folks, let's see if they are not really botos! They come in, they drink everything and please don't tell me later you had not been properly warned about them". But since the ball was very good, and everyone was in a good mood, they let the strangers come in. Some people noticed they were transpiring a lot. Firstly, one of them got out of the party. Sometime later, he got got back with this hair totally wet. Then it was the other one who got out. He also got back with both hair and face wet. The people who were throwing the party were very concerned. After dancing a lot, the drinks were served. When both of them saw the bottles, their eyes shone deeply. They drank may bottles and didn't get drunk at all. No one noticed when they got out of the party with 2 girls. In the next morning the girls got back to that place in order to find them again, but found nothing. Some months later, there were more fatherless children. All of them sons of botos. There are a lot of sons of botos out there in the world.
