Seagull Beach or The
Seagull as it is widely known, is one of the most calm
and beautiful places in Itanhaém. It is also a section
of the city near the beach where there's the estuary of
the Seagull River (or Rio Gaivota in Brazilian
Portuguese) which waters end up in the sea right across
from a solitary island. Both the islet and the beach as
well as the section of the city nearby were all named
after this river. There are amazing panoramas
everywhere; that's the place that marks the transition
between the urbanized sections of Itanhaém and the
vastness, the solitude of the beach, surrounded by
fields and the tropical forest spotted with palm tress
here and there, as though they were lost among this
unbelievable immensity.
There are also beautiful
views of the high walls of the Sea Mountain Range and
the Jesuists' Rock (Pedra dos Jesuítas) the spot of the
Abarabebê's Ruins (an ancient church built by the
priests in the 16th century - note: Abarebebê means
"priest that flies", a nickname given by the Indians to
the Priest Leonardo Nunes in the 16th century, because he
could be seen everywhere in spite of the vastness of
this region). The Mountains in Peruíbe, The Itatins
Mountain Range (Serra dos Itatins) and the Juréia
Mountains which heights seem to dive
abruptly into
the sea, make up a picture of rare magnificence. There's
an ethereal silence only broken by the waves, the
families of Quero-Quero birds living in their usual joie
de vivre, the seagulls and the tropical birds of the
Atlantic Forest.
When the seawater is clear,
some divers venture around The Seagull Island (Ilha do
Gaivota) since it is considered a nice diving spot where
a lot of local species of fish can be found. The Island
is almost flat, with some small bushes in its center and
a rocky coastline. Domains of the sun, the sea and
sometimes the winds, this place is of an indescribable
beauty and vastness, in fact, only experienced by the
ones who have stepped there. For the tourists who prefer
fishing on the beach, this is also an incredible place
for this kind of spot, attracting many people all year
long.
